Dennis Hicks for Burro

Dennis Hicks ad

In case you missed it, Team Burro picked up newcomer Dennis Hicks while we were in Austin for NAHBS. Seeing as how we practically consider Texas our home away from home (it really is for me, NATIVE TEXAN!), and how much we love Fast Folks and all the kids supporting their healthy bike scene, we figured it was time to take out an ad in the upcoming issue of Dropout Zine, the local Austin bike rag. And in true Burro spirit we kept it local as f*#k. The ad features local badass Dennis Hicks, was photographed by the skilled eye of Leo Furmansky and the ad itself was designed by yet another Texan, Anthony Reynolds. Really stoked with how it came out. Look for it in the new issue and if you live in Austin, stop by Fast Folks and check out one of the best bike shops in the South!

We’re also being carried in Austin by Bicycle Sports Shop. Reppin hard from the First Coast to the Third Coast SON!

Burro Bar Opens in May

April 07 2011 posted by Jack

PARTY PARTY PARTY

I don’t if you guys keep up with current events but we’re opening a bar next month.

SAY WHAT?!

Yep, yep, yep. Burro and Jack Diablo have teamed up with the Shantytown Pub / Lomax Lodge crew of Ian Ranne, Marianne Purcell and Matt Hume to re-open the former London Bridge Pub in Downtown Jacksonville. If you’re not familiar without the location, there’s some interesting history over at Metro Jacksonville that’s worth checking out.

We are super stoked that this is happening and improvements have already begun on the interior. Right now we’ve got Duval Destroyer and Shaun Thurston, two long-time Burro collaborators busy fancying up the front room and main bar area. We’ve also recruited just about every artist/designer we’ve ever worked with on a project that is going to be extra awesome but we want it all to be a surprise.

Other notable changes to the operation include the installation of 20 taps that will always flow with the best beers in town and we’re even planning on pouring up draft root beer for the non-drinkers. Live music and special events will play a large role in the way we bring folks through the door. Rather than shoulder the burden ourselves we’ll be sharing booking duties with some of the already established “agents” here in town but if you’d like to play or set up a show, feel free to email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Oh yeah, we’re calling it BURRO BAR.

duh

If you are at all familiar with the way we do business then you surely know that we don’t eff around and like to do things big, cheap and fast. Grand Opening is scheduled for May Art Walk, that’s May 4th so mark your calendars. We’ll have a showcase of awesome local bands including one of Brooklyn, NY’s finest stoner metal bands Bad Dream who will be stopping by on their US tour. Also confirmed are After the Bomb, Baby!, Opiate Eyes and Chicken & Whiskey (duh).

Website is coming soon but for no, there’s tons of activity going on at the Facebook Page.

Can’t wait to party with y’all!!!

Burro Sponsored Event: Fixed Fight 5

March 31 2011 posted by Jack

fixed fight 5

Fixed Fight is the OG of Florida bike events but it looks like this is the last one :( Now in it’s fifth year, this race has reached legendary status even out here in Jacksonville. Todd had this to say:

This is it, Fixed Fight turns five! It all began back in April of 2007. Five years later and this is where it will end. I’ve decided that the race that “started it all” in Florida has run its course so to speak. Multiple races have spawned from what we’ve done over the last five years and we couldn’t be happier. The bike community has grown immensely and although we can’t take credit for that, we do feel that we encouraged it along the way.

The sponsor list for this little dude is a testament to the scope and importance of Fixed Fight. Burro was added to the sponsor late in the game last year but we did make this sick one-off messenger.

A year later and we have both our email and our sponsorship game locked down tight so we’ll be doing something pretty rad this year. There will be a mountain of dope swag at this thing so if you own a bicycle and live within a day’s drive (or can swing the trip), I highly recommend getting your ass to St. Pete to vie for some of them prizes!

Mike Schmitt Around the World

March 29 2011 posted by Jack

MTS reppin it worldwide

Team Burro and The Grime’s Mike Schmitt recently headed across the pond to ride and compete in Europe and Asia repping the new G.O.A.T. frame from Grime Bikes and his Burro Pro-Model Pedal Straps. Since the moment he touched down on foreign shores, he’s been making huge waves.

It all started with this teaser video of Mike on some serious grindage in Lisbon, Portugal warming up for West Jam.

Once the event was over the videos started pouring in…

West Jam Edit - SNDTRCK from SoundTrack on Vimeo.

So basically, fgfs is blowing the fuck up in Europe. The crew headed to Paris next before jumping over to Asia. Looks like Mike took a nasty fall trying to nail this 24 stair. Sacrebleu indeed!

Ouch! Mike had this to say on the fall:

I sprained my ankle pretty badly trying to feeble this 24 stair ledge at Bercy in Paris, France. Corinne Stoll shot this photo as im falling off my bike. Hopefully with enough ice, rest, and trees I will heal up quickly.

Get better Mikey!

Look for those Pro-Model Straps to drop before Summer…

King of the Hipsters

March 29 2011 posted by Jack

Burro inspires a Salt Lake City tradition

Some time last year we sponsored a race in Salt Lake City, UT with a custom messenger bag. The race was affiliated with the release and showing of a local, independent film, “The Tale of Don Giovanni: That Indomitable Hipster” (trailer below). Believe it or not it was the organizers’s idea but we made a bag that proclaimed quite boldly, “LOOK AT THAT FUCKING HIPSTER!” It was actually a really cool looking bag but not something that most people would actually want to wear around town in this day and age of incessant hipster-bashing. As a result, a tradition began in SLC. SaltCycle has more:

From here-on, the winner of the Look-at-That-Fucking-Hipster bag will carry a hallowed Salt Lake City mantle, and be named, for a quarterly time frame, the King/Queen of the Hipsters. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, as they must wear the bag as often as possible during their reign. It should be used. Luckily, their reign is finite. Every 3 months, starting December 16th, the bag is passed to a new challenger in an event of the current champion’s concoction. It doesn’t matter what kind of event it is, sprint or drag race or alleycat or hill climb or tall bike joust or that game with spoons and eggs that Esther cooked up, it just has to involve bikes. The organizer of the race cannot compete in their own challenge.

Further, with the title of King-of-the Hipsters, the champion forfeits their privacy, and their phone number and email address are posted on saltcycle/facebook for all to see. In the event that they don’t host their event near 3 months after their crowning, they are free to be subjected to public (friendly) harassment until the event is held.

This is the legacy, Saltcycle. A guaranteed bike event every 3 months, rain or shine. Use it well.

WOW! We are all really stoked that our contribution to Salt Lake City bike culture was able to inspire an ongoing tradition and promote (if not force!) people to organize races and events who might not otherwise give it a shot. Check out the video and trailer below or head to SaltCycle for more info on SLC bike events. Keep It Wheel!
