dope prize bag
We’ve just finished our latest race sponsorship bag for Sean from TakeoverLA‘s Lord of Griffith 3 race. From what I hear, it’s a pretty grueling challenge so we are proud to support it for the second year in a row. Here’s the bag we did last year:
I believe this year’s bag will be going to the number one lady, but that doesn’t mean it has to be girly right? Hell naw! Any lady who can hold her own with the boys is probably just as into cool shit like battleaxes as her male counterparts anyway, and deserving as well. Without further ado, the bag…

I tell you what, JOB is getting real tight with the appliqué lately. If you’re serious about getting a for real custom bag, hit us up. The extra-special treatment starts at an additional $50 but please have art or a solid explanation/idea for what you want.

SUCCESS!
Well, we did it. In less than two months and the slimmest of budgets, we opened our little bar. In order to time the opening during May Art Walk and Bury Your Bike 4, we had to bust our asses and pull a lot of all-nighters to make it happen. Between getting our license just in time, still not having a working phone line, a severed finger and a host of other would-be catastrophes, we somehow managed to pull it off just in time for our ribbon cutting as captured by JaxScene’s Tom Pennington.

I could use a bunch of grandiose, hyperbolic adjectives to describe the turn-out, energy and mayhem that ensued, but I think this slick little video that our best bud, Kyle Emotron put together tells the story about as good as I could ever hope to.
Yeah, it was pretty nuts! But nobody got hurt, not that much broke, everybody had a good time and we can’t wait to do it again every night!
And now comes the time when we dole out our thank yous. This is the dreaded part because so many people helped out and we’re bound to leave out a name or two so if we forgot you, come yell at us and we’ll buy you a beer. Here goes…
First and foremost we have to get mad props to our artists. Duval Destroyer himself, Matt Abercrombie was the brains and hands behind the art in our main bar room. We set him up with a simple theme and let his imagination run wild. Behind his work, Shaun Thurston tied it all together with some paint and creative direction. Uncle Jesse Whitacker added his own signature touches to the installation and Crystal Floyd came up with the idea for the bullet casing trim. It’s safe to say that their work was an Art Walk show of its own. We love you guys forever!
We also worked with some of the best designers in town. Varick Rosete whipped up our clean new logo in a week and the donkey face is going to become an iconic image in Downtown Jacksonville for sure. Sean Collins is chopping away at our website. There’s a temporary site up now with some basic info and our Twitter feed (@burrobarjax), but the full version of the site will be up soon and will BLOW MINDS!
Finally we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all those who helped with the physical labor and build-out. Will Green installed our sinks and fixed our leaks. Spencer came through and did some expert carpentry and even gave a piece of his finger to the building of Burro Bar. His sacrifice will be forever remembered and appreciated. Dave corrected the monstrosity that was the game room floor. Reeder, Kyle, Aaron and many more of our good buddies were instrumental in running errands, washing windows, hauling trash and all the stuff nobody wants to do. You guys are the best!
Can’t not thank Darius for the sound system. The room sounds amazing and it’s just the right amount of power (if not way more than enough). And with that, we’ll give a shout out to the bands: Honey Chamber kicked it off and never sounded better. After the Bomb Baby! blew more than a few minds and might have made some babies too. Opiate Eyes drew quite the crowd and drowned in applause. Shoppers were on point and got the crowd fired up for even more. Bad Dream made it slow and sludgy right before Chicken & Whiskey tore the roof off with a dance party to rival the impending apocalypse. It’s in the video.
The party continues at Burro Bar throughout the weekend and the rest of time. Last night Arsun Fist and Mas Appeal laid down some Latin-inspired hip hop and DJ Chef Rocc played what he wanted to play. Nobody complained. Tonight is going to be yet another rager as Bury Your Bike 4 ends their Pass the Mic n Bike ride with a special performance by Ancient River from Gainesville. We’ll also have Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, Dick Dastardly and Virginal Flowers bringing the noise.
If you want to keep up with Burro Bar, Like us, Follow us, or jsut check out the new site.
Keep It Wheel y’all!

Burro-sponsored Tallahasse bike event
OH MAN! Thundercats was my favorite shit growing up. This Florida race looks like a blast!

Burro Bar gets a logo!
Excitement is building around the shop as we start to put the finishing touches on the brand new Burro Bar! We’re pushing things right up to the last minute so the Super Secret Sneak Peak Soft Opening Party might just have to be the same as the highly publicized, widely attended Grand Opening. Oh well!
While you’ll have to wait until opening night to se what we’ve done with the place, we are more than happy to present to you our new logo, designed by none other than Varick Rosete, AIGA Jacksonville President. We gave him a tiny bit of guidance and left the creation of our logo in his very capable hands. I’m sure you’ll agree that he did a fantastic job. Can’t wait to see this on t-shirts, stickers, coasters, tattoos, etc!

So come check us out at the Grand Opening May 4th during May Art Walk. You can resume your routine of pre, after and just plain partying down on the corner of Ocean and Adams at Jacksonville’s newest and finest boozehole.
We have a ton of awesome bands lined up playing from 7pm til round about closing time, including:
7pm - Jeremiah
The frontman of Jacksonville indie-psych purveyors Wudun will open things off with a solo set of funeral-inspired music. Not really sure what to expect but knowing Jeremiah, it will change lives!
8pm - After the Bomb, Baby!
Synth punk weirdos ATBB! need no introduction. Be prepared for “the sexy” to be brought. Hard. If it’s too much for you, fear not, we have 28 beers on tap to prevent your loins from melting all over the carpet.
9pm - Opiate Eyes
Rising indue future-stars Opiate Eyes have just released a new EP called Dance 5 and it is amazing! Skinny Records represent!
10pm - Bad Dream
Brooklyn, NY psychedelic stoner-sludge masters will be melting unsuspecting faces right after the old folks leave to kick off the Art Walk Afterparty. Make sure you’re well prepared for this set. The Riverwalk is a nice, close location to get your head right ![]()
11pm - Shoppers
Female-fronted noise rock a la Sonic Youth and Dino Jr. All the way from Syracuse, NY and stoked to see what our soundsystem can handle!
12am - Honey Chamber
Infintesmal Records’ Honey Chamber return to the spotlight with a slightly new lineup. It’s like running into an old friend you haven’t seen in years!
1am - Chicken & Whiskey
We are going to be hella-wasted but those are always the best C&W shows anyway, right? School is OUT so stick around until we have to kick you out. The A/C works so it will only be a little sweaty.
There’s a Facebook Event Page with more info for those so inclined. Export that thing into your Google Calendar/iCal why don’t ya?!

In case you missed it yesterday we finally unveiled our brand new Mike Schmitt Pro Model pedal straps. Rather than concot some clever marketing copy, we’ll let the man himself tell it like it is:
During Summer 2010 I set out to design the most comfortable strap shape. I wanted to design something that would feel thin on your foot, have no metal pieces, and would hold up to every day riding abuse. It made since to me to make the strap wider on the outside of the pedal. While most straps have the bulk of the material on the top of your foot, the most ware was always on the outside near the pedal. This strap design wraps from the both sides of the pedal leaving the straps connecting it only on the bottom inside. When the bike falls down rather than the connecting strap, the thick outer part takes the abuse. With the idea of more material on the outside, I realized the strap should taper and use less material the closer you are to the cranks. The velcro clamping system is a two piece “mouth” style that allows you to contour the straps in a few different angles and tightnesses to fit your foot. The way the material wraps from edge to edge and has one wide base keeps the rigidity of the arch and even when stepped on usually goes back into place allowing your foot to slide in (and out in emergencies) easily. With the large surface area to work with i figured instead of designing something to brand these straps all the same, why not let the design aspect be customizable by the rider. With this idea of you being able to color-match and fully customize I realized that what you put in your straps has a lot to do with how rigid they are. If you like them soft then you can use a more flexible thinner material as a picture insert. On the other hand, if you want a strap that stays stiff and will always be easy to slide in and out out; you can use thicker or harder material such as laminated card stock. With this strap you get less weight and material, but more options for fit, rigidity, and style. No other strap company is offering something as specialized as this. This is the future of foot retention.
